He began writing seriously after his stepfather died in 1943, publishing essays and reviews in The Nation and other publications. As a teenager, he worked as a preacher in a small revivalist church while attending DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx.Īfter high school, Baldwin moved to Greenwich Village. He was raised by his mother, Emma Berdis Jones, and his stepfather, David Baldwin. James Baldwin was born in Harlem on August 2, 1924.
